When Disney announced on April 11th, 2019 they would make The Simpsons available for streaming on Disney+, fans around the world were delighted. However, some viewers quickly noticed that important visual gags were being cut out of the scenes, most notably during a tour of the Duff brewery, where three pipes go into different vats. In the widescreen format, the focus is on the bottom of the screen, while in the original standard definition shows that all three pipes connect to the same source.

The Simpsons have been their iconic, dysfunctional selves since December 7th, 1989, when Bart and Homer adopted Santa’s Little Helper in “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire”. Since then they have produced 684 episodes, seven music albums and six singles, nine comic book series, 27 Simpsons video games, and 684 episodes. And with approximately 22 minutes per episode, that means they will be able to keep viewers entertained for days, if not weeks or months (it would take 10 days of cartoon-fueled insomnia to watch the whole thing without any breaks).

They have inspired such stunts as a family who recreated The Simpsons’ opening sequence and countless fan fiction and art. Other popular shows such as South Park have recreated scenes from the show or simply poked fun at them (“Simpsons did it!”). That seems pretty fair, because The Simpsons have poked similar fun at other works, such as sci fi classic, Planet of the Apes. They are truly an icon of the century, and now further generations can enjoy them they way they were intended to.

The Simpsons has been on the air since December 1989, and started streaming on Disney+ November 2019.
