Ethan Embry, who played the band’s bassist (unsurprisingly named T.B. Player), posted that he would unite with Johnathon Schaech (singer/guitarist Jimmy Mattingly), Tom Everett Scott (drummer Guy Patterson), Steve Zahn (guitarist Lenny Haise) and Liv Tyler (Faye Dolan) for the live stream to raise money for MusiCares for COVID Relief Fund. In his post, Embry said that special guests may appear during the live stream. The band’s commentary reunion will be streamed live on YouTube on Friday at 7 p.m. EST.

The film’s title track was written by Schlesinger, who was the Emmy-winning songwriter and bassist in Fountains of Wayne. It was nominated for a best original song Oscar and Golden Globe in 1997. “That Thing You Do” was a moderate success upon the film’s release in 1996, with the song peaking at No. 41 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

“We are going to raise money for MusicCares @musicares #COVIDrelief fund, in honor of #AdamSchlesinger, who wrote and recorded the title song and sadly, passed away last week due to COVID-19,” Embry wrote in his Instagram post.

While the soundtrack was recorded by professional musicians, the quartet learned all of the Wonders’ songs and performed them in the film, which made the fictitious band seem more realistic, according to a 2016 Entertainment Weekly oral history for the film’s 20-year anniversary. Despite the film’s success, Embry told Entertainment Weekly he couldn’t stand the title song. “I remember it reached that point of like, ‘I can’t play this song one more time,’” he said.

The movie follows the meteoric rise of the Wonders following the success of “That Thing You Do” and their struggles with success. It was Hanks’ directorial debut, and he also played the band’s manager, Mr. White. Various celebrities made cameos throughout the film, including singer Chris Isaak, future Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, comedy director Paul Feig and actor Kevin Pollak.

The live stream is not the first time the Wonders have reunited. Three-quarters of the group participated in a “Goddamn Comedy Jam” performance at Los Angeles’ Roxy Theatre in April 2017. Zahn did not participate, but comedian Jeremiah Watkins filled in on lead guitar, sporting a cutout mask of the actor’s face.
