Biden had pledged to select a woman as his vice presidential candidate and faced pressure to pick an African American, particularly with the anti-racism demonstrations this summer. He announced Harris, who was considered a top candidate for the job, as his running mate on Tuesday after weeks of speculation.

The two will appear together for the first time as running mates at the Delaware event. Their remarks will focus on “working together to restore the soul of the nation and fight for working families to move the country forward.”

Official guidance from the Biden campaign has the event start time listed as 3:50 p.m. A live stream on The Hill’s YouTube channel has video footage scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EDT. Time magazine also has a live stream scheduled, but the feed is set to start at 10 a.m. EDT.

Biden called Harris a “fearless fighter for the little guy” and “one of the country’s finest public servants” when announcing her as his pick for vice president.

“Back when Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau. I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse. I was proud then, and I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign,” Biden posted on Twitter. Beau Biden is the former vice president’s late son.

Shortly after the announcement, Harris said she was “honored” to join Biden on the ticket and will do “what it takes to make him our commander in chief.”

In April, Jill Biden, the former vice president’s wife, told CNN’s New Day that she suspected her husband would pick a woman who “has the same values,” because having shared values was part of the reason he and former President Barack Obama “got along so well.”

More important than having shared values is having someone who can take over as president at a moment’s notice, the former vice president told James Corden, host of The Late Late Show, in May.

“The first and most important quality is someone who, if I were to walk away immediately from the office for whatever reason…they can be president and the public could look at that person and say she is capable of being president of the United States tomorrow,” Biden told Corden.

Hitting the campaign trail, Biden and Harris will also attend a virtual grass-roots campaign finance event on Wednesday evening.
