Zoom has nifty features built-in for you to share non-verbal feedback or express yourself through in-meeting reactions during meetings. So let’s explore how you can enable and use these features to give feedback.

Express Without Speaking, Communicate Without Interrupting

There may be times during a Zoom meeting when you want to give feedback on an idea. Or a presenter is using an amusing Zoom avatar that has made you laugh—and you want to give a reaction to it.

However, you want to give feedback without speaking or chatting so that you won’t interrupt the presenter and disrupt the flow of the meeting. Instead, if the meeting organizer has enabled non-verbal feedback and meeting reactions, you can choose an emoji or icon to send your feedback. Let’s see how.

How to Enable Non-Verbal Feedback on Your PC and Phone

It’s easy to enable non-verbal feedback on your Windows, macOS, or Linux PC; or your Android or iOS phone:

Sign in to the Zoom web portal. Click/tap Settings in the navigation panel. On your phone, tap on the down arrow in the Profile tab to open navigation panel, and then tap Settings. Click/tap the Meeting tab. Under In Meeting (Basic), ensure that the Non-Verbal feedback setting is enabled. If the setting is disabled, toggle it on. If a verification dialog displays, choose Turn On to verify the change.

Once you enable non-verbal feedback, the Reactions menu will show the six non-verbal feedback icons: Yes, No, Speed Up, Slow Down, Coffee Mug (I’m Away), and Raise Hand/Lower Hand.

The Raise Hand/Lower Hand non-verbal feedback can only be disabled for webinar attendees in a webinar.

How to Enable In-Meeting Reactions for Zoom Meetings

Just below the Non-Verbal Feedback setting is the setting for Meeting Reactions. So all you need to do is on your PC or phone is:

Check if the Meeting reactions setting is enabled. If the setting is disabled, toggle it on. If a verification dialog displays, choose Turn On to verify the change. Then just choose from the following meeting reaction options:

All emojis—allows meeting participants to use any emoji available in Zoom chat as a reaction. Selected emojis—allows participants to use only the six standard meeting reaction emojis—Clapping Hands, Thumbs Up, Heart, Tears of Joy, Open Mouth, Party Popper (Tada, Celebration). Finally, click Save.

How to Use Meeting Reactions for Feedback on Your PC

Expressing yourself through reactions and providing non-verbal feedback is a matter of a couple of clicks on your Windows, macOS, or Linux PC. Let’s see how:

Join a Zoom meeting as a participant. Click the Reactions button on the Zoom meeting toolbar to open the menu. Choose the emoji you want from the six Reaction emojis. If the meeting host has allowed the use of all emojis, click the three-dot menu to open All Emojis. Then choose an emoji for what you want to express—like a Thumbs Up for approval or a Party Popper to congratulate a colleague. If non-verbal feedback is allowed in the meeting, you can choose from the six non-verbal feedback icons. For example, you could choose Speed Up or Slow Down to request increasing the pace of the presentation or making it slower. If you have to attend to something urgent, you could use the Coffee Cup ☕️ (I’m away) icon. The Coffee Cup (I’m away) non-verbal feedback requires the desktop client for Windows, macOS, and Linux; version 5. 7. 3 or higher.

By default, the meeting reactions have a yellow skin tone. On the Zoom desktop client for Windows and macOS, you can also set your skin tone for emojis in the All Emojis menu. Moreover, your meeting reactions will be seen by all participants and will appear for 10 seconds on your video panel before automatically disappearing.

However, non-verbal feedback icons will stay on your video panel until you tap on their icons again to turn them off. Meeting reactions and non-verbal feedback icons will also appear next to the participants’ names in the chat window.

How to Use Meeting Reactions for Feedback on Your Phone

It’s not very different to use Zoom meeting reactions on your Android or iOS phone:

Join a Zoom meeting as a participant. Tap More. Choose from the non-verbal feedback icons, or tap on the three-dot menu to choose from a full set of emojis. Tap the icon again to remove it. You can only have one icon active at a time.
