How to Use the Microsoft Edge Password Manager to Store Passwords

Microsoft Edge includes a built-in password manager that will store your passwords for you. If the manager is turned on, it will ask you if you want to save your password each time you log into a new website. If you have the strong password suggestion feature turned on, it will prompt you with a randomly generated strong password and then offer to save the password for you each time you sign up for a new website.

Here’s how to store passwords with the Microsoft Edge password manager:

Navigate to a website that you aren’t logged into, and click sign in or otherwise start the sign in process. Enter your username or email like you normally would when logging in. When entering your password, a key icon will appear on the right end of the URL bar, followed by a password manager popup. Verify that the username and password are correct, and click Save. Complete the login process like you normally would. Your password has been saved in the password manager. The next time you sign in to that website, you’ll have the option to use your stored password.

How to Edit and Delete Passwords From the Microsoft Edge Password Manager

Microsoft Edge allows you to view all of your saved passwords in the browser settings’ password manager section. You can check your passwords at any time, change them, or even delete them. The same interface also allows you to export and import passwords if you want to make a manual backup or restore your passwords from a backup.

Here’s how to edit and delete passwords from the Microsoft Edge password manager:

Open Edge, and click the menu icon (three horizontal dots) in the upper right corner of the browser. Click Settings. Click Passwords. Locate the password you want to change or delete, and click the corresponding three horizontal dots icon. Click the corresponding eye icon to view your password instead. Click Edit to change the login information, or Delete to completely delete the login information. Scan your fingerprint, enter your PIN, or enter your password as prompted. If deleting, the entry will be deleted. If changing a password, then enter the correct username and password, and click Done.

How to Export Passwords From the Microsoft Edge Password Manager

Microsoft Edge makes it easy to export your passwords, allowing you to create a backup or immediately import your passwords into a different browser.

Navigate to the Profiles / Passwords management screen as described in the previous section, or just enter edge://settings/passwords in the URL bar. Click the three horizontal dots icon to the right of the saved passwords heading and select Export passwords. Click Export passwords. Scan your fingerprint, enter your PIN, or enter your password as prompted. Select a location to save your passwords, and click Save.

How to Import Passwords into the Microsoft Edge Password Manager

If you used to use a different browser, like Chrome, legacy Edge, or the now-unsupported Internet Explorer, you could import your passwords from those browsers directly into the Microsoft Edge password manager. There’s no need to export, as Edge can obtain the passwords directly from the other browser as long as it’s still installed on your computer.

Here’s how to import passwords into the Microsoft Edge password manager:

Enter edge://settings/importData into the Edge URL bar. Click the Import from dropdown, and select the browser to import from. Make sure the box next to Saved passwords is checked, and click Import. Wait for the process to finish, and click Done.

How to Use the Microsoft Edge Password Manager and Password Generator

When you sign up for a new website or change your password at a site you’re already signed up with, you can let Edge generate and save a strong password. This strong password will consist of a random string of letters, numbers, and special characters that will be difficult for most people to remember. Since the password manager can immediately save the password for you, there’s no need to remember or write it down.

Here’s how to generate and store strong passwords with the Microsoft Edge password manager:

Navigate to a website you aren’t signed up with and begin the sign up process, or access the password changing feature of a website you are signed up with. Enter the required information, and click the password field. A suggested password pops up when you select the Password field that you can use and save. Click the suggested strong password, or click refresh for a new password. Complete the signup or password change process. Your strong password will be saved in the Microsoft Edge password manager.
